History

The Barnum Festival is one of Greater Bridgeport’s signature annual traditions, created to celebrate community pride and the lasting legacy of Phineas Taylor Barnum. Dating back to 1948, the Festival began as a way to support local businesses, lift community spirit, and honor Barnum’s role as a world-renowned showman, civic leader, entrepreneur, and public servant in Bridgeport.

The Festival emerged during a period when Bridgeport and the surrounding region were seeking renewed energy following the economic changes of the postwar years. Community and business leaders recognized that a seasonal celebration could bring people together, encourage residents to take pride in their city, attract visitors, and create opportunities for local merchants, artists, organizations, and families.

Above all else, P.T. Barnum was an entertainer — he celebrated hoaxes, and founded the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus with James Anthony Bailey. In a nod to him, and in true Barnum tradition, a Ringmaster is appointed each year to lead the Festival and help promote the Greater Bridgeport region.

Over time, the Barnum Festival grew into a multi-week celebration featuring parades, concerts, fireworks, cultural activities, philanthropic events, and family-friendly entertainment. Its events reflect the imagination and showmanship associated with P.T. Barnum while also highlighting the diversity, creativity, and resilience of Greater Bridgeport.

Today, the Barnum Festival continues to serve as both a tribute to Barnum’s contributions and a platform for community connection. By supporting local businesses, fostering philanthropy, and offering accessible events for families, the Festival carries forward a tradition of celebration, service, and civic pride for current and future generations.
